60th Jubilee Bells rang out with Irish Songs
On Wednesday, October 20, the sisters at Holy Redeemer Convent, Sydney, NS, welcomed the family and friends of Sr. Gwen O’Neil who celebrated her 60th Jubilee. Among the guests were two of Gwen’s ceremony, Sisters Mary Morris and Millie MacNeil.
It was obvious, upon entering the community room, that we were celebrating someone of Irish descent.
Sr. Catherine Morris gave a very warm welcome to all who gathered for this Jubilee Celebration. A Happy Hour followed and then we were invited to the dining room (décor of shamrocks and shades of green) where we feasted on a delicious roast beef dinner with all the trimmings.
A very festive prayer service followed during which time we prayed our gratitude for Gwen, Mary and Millie and their contribution to the Congregation de Notre-Dame. We sang popular Irish songs between the readings and tributes. The beautiful and humorous tributes and memories were given by Sr. Eileen Roach and Gwen’s brother Kevin. Sr. Catherine V. MacDonald organized the program for the evening and kept it running smoothly. Sr. Gwen expressed her gratitude to her family. In her words of gratitude, she also expressed her appreciation for the presence of two members of her ceremony and the sisters from the area for being with her for the evening.
Gwen was very grateful to her community, Catherine, Isabel and Catherine V. as well as the house staff who gave of their time to help make the evening such a wonderful event. Sure, when Irish hearts are happy all the world seems bright and gay!
