Fourth Sunday and Nativity of the Lord
On this fourth Sunday of Advent, the liturgy directs our gaze toward a young girl from Nazareth. She experienced the greatest adventure of humanity, that of God made flesh. This year, we are invited to reflect on the Gospel of the Annunciation. We know this gospel well. This divine moment totally changed the fate of humanity. The archangel Gabriel visited Mary to tell her that she had been chosen by God to be the mother of his Son. And Mary accepted with these simple words: “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” This Sunday is the opportunity to reflect on this crucial responsibility that God bestowed upon Mary.
The Lord continues to call men, women and even children. He no longer sends the archangel Gabriel to us but instead places people on our path. He can also speak to us through the words of the gospels. He finds us at our farthest away and at our lowest. We are chosen by God to embody His goodness, kindness and justice. In our troubled world, this is more vital than ever. The Church is often mocked and ignored. Let us not fear bearing witness to the joy in our suffering, troubled, worried world. Let us share a message of serenity.
And following the archangel’s message, which would made the headlines if it happened today, the greatest news of all was announced: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” With the host of angels, let us praise God and say: “Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.” Merry Christmas! Let us once more experience the joy of being God’s children!
