Honduras 2025: a journey of vulnerability

On May 9, 2025, Claire (also a member of EEJS) and I left Quebec to attend the biennial meeting of the Social Justice Action Network, as representatives of Marguerite-Bourgeoys Province. This year’s meeting was organized by Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Region and took place in Honduras under the theme of migration.

It was a journey marked by many unforeseen events that brought me into contact with a strong sense of vulnerability – my own vulnerability, but also that of the inhabitants of these Latin American countries and of the people on the migration routes facing situations of unspeakable injustice.

There were also the touching stories of a young Venezuelan father who is a general practitioner whom we met at the Caritas Honduras Sagrada Familia temporary rest center on the Nicaraguan border, and that of Juana Zùniga, spokeswoman for the group “Résistance Guapinol,” which fights to protect human and environmental rights in the face of government negligence with regard to foreign mining companies. Her husband is currently in prison and several activists from their group have been murdered.

Vulnerability – what can be wounded, jostled, easily affected physically or emotionally. We often experience this state through intense emotions such as fear, sadness, insecurity and even shame.

But being vulnerable is not a weakness. When we dare to be vulnerable with courage, it is a source of innovation, creativity and change. And these people are extremely courageous!
