Justice Signings

Sister Rebecca McKenna recently signed two documents in the name of Visitation Province under the recommendation of the Justice Peace and Integrity of Creation Core Committee.

  1. Migrants Rights: This letter to the government, sponsored by the Migrants Rights Network, rejects scapegoating migrants while cutting 775,000 study and work permits, and gutting permanent residency. It states that these cuts will not solve the housing, healthcare, and affordability crises—it’s unfair and distracts from holding the elite accountable.

The letter goes on to say that cutting permanent resident numbers is a direct assault on migrants who will be forced to remain temporary or become undocumented, and pushed further into exploitative jobs. Families will be torn apart and the financial burden on our people will rise. Including migrants already in Canada in the changes, who came under different rules with promises of work and permanent residency, is unacceptable. Delays in regularizing undocumented migrants only increases abuse.

It clearly states that Canada’s immigration policy should focus on fairness. Immigrants are not to blame for low wages or high costs—they build our communities.

The Provincial Leadership Team knows that this is a complex issue but the right to seek a safe place to live is recognized as an international human right and aligns with our Orientations.

A Call to Action for COP29: This letter is from the Interfaith Liaison Committee. Some of the calls in the letter to the participants of COP29 are to:

Create ambitious climate actions to keep us below the 1.5 degrees, in alignment with the Paris Agreement

Prioritize phasing out fossil fuels in all countries

Support climate finances as well as loss and damages to support the needs of the most vulnerable who are being hit the hardest as a result of the climate crisis

Recognize that climate action is also an action for peace given the many conflicts that stem from conflicts over natural resources

Engage in real collaboration

The letter ends by stating: “As people of faith, we commit to being an encouraging presence at COP29, urging leaders to approach negotiations with genuine intention to find solutions. By fostering hope, trust, and decisive action, we can lift the human family’s spirit and create ripples of positive change. Together, we can give the world a reason to feel hopeful about our shared future.”
