Memories/slices of life – The work of a liturgist

Yes, indeed, it is a job, with several stages; let me explain.

First of all, we need to look at the biblical texts for the day’s celebration and immerse ourselves in them so that the songs we choose are in harmony with the meaning of the Word of God.

The choice of hymns is not made haphazardly. The hymns must be appropriate firstly to the liturgical season (Advent, Lent or Ordinary Time…) and secondly to the precise moment of the celebration: for example, a enthusiastic opening hymn is ill-suited to a thanksgiving where we want to encourage interiority. Furthermore, during important celebrations, it is a good idea to take into account the four official languages of the CND, as we reject exclusion in our chapels… The songs are adapted as much as possible to the talents of those gathered, otherwise the numerous CDs replace our tired voices, and there is something for every taste. So, in real time, the person preparing the songs for a Eucharistic celebration will take at least thirty minutes.

In immediate preparation, forgetfulness can cause problems: therefore, it necessary for the presiding priest and for the congregation to write out the program for the celebration, print each of the songs, bring the necessary CDs and, sometimes, take a few minutes with the congregation to learn the choruses.
