JPIC Coordinator Update

After a first round of interviews, the hiring committee did not find a suitable candidate for our JPIC Coordinator. Please continue to hold this in prayer over these summer months and we will try again in the fall. Is there someone you know who would be perfect for this position? Do not hesitate to talk to them about it and invite them to apply. Thanks, and have a wonderful summer!

“SAN ANTONIO — Dozens of migrants were found dead in an abandoned big rig in San Antonio on Monday in what appears to be the deadliest human smuggling case in modern U.S. history.”

I was shocked to hear the news of the migrants found dead and barely surviving in a truck in San Antonio Texas. After spending 3 weeks with some migrants trying to cross the border my heart aches for those who have died.

During our time at the border, we did go out to the desert and plant crosses in places where dead bodies were found. I am feeling helpless at this moment, a feeling that comes when we hear of the devastation of so many happenings in our world today. Maria Shriver writes: "Keep your heart open in hell". Please include in your prayer the migrants who have died and those families who are suffering their loss.

Listening to Indigenous Voices

Our JPIC Core Committee was very pleased to welcome over 30 Sisters and Associates on Tuesday evening, June 21, to begin our study of Listening to Indigenous Voices. Sister Priscilla Solomon, an Ojibway member of the Anishinabeg Nation and a Sister of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie, brought the blessing of the Anishinabeg Nation to our undertaking. Sister Priscilla was very encouraging as she shared her elder wisdom in inviting us forward to explore the Dialogue Guide on Justice and Right Relationships.

Having read Pages 7-19, we divided into small groups to share on specific questions. Coordinators had been contacted in advance and were prepared; everything moved along very well.

At the conclusion, we returned to the large group of smiling faces and enthusiastic followers. We agreed that the next gathering would be September 20th, the third Tuesday of September.

Sister Karen Kelly proposes we meet in the same small group for two sessions, and then move to a different group for two sessions, etc. to hear from more voices along the journey. We are especially grateful to Sister Karen and Sister Maura for planning this introductory meeting, contacting coordinators and “getting us started” to pick up in the fall.

Book Recommendation

I’ve Been Thinking by Maria Shriver is a series of short reflections beginning with a quote from many different sources, her personal reflection based on her personal and professional lived experiences and ending with a brief prayer. Topics include prayer, family, letting go, courage, faith and many others common to all of us. I’m listening to the audiobook from the Ottawa Library read by Maria herself. It is also available in print and e-book formats.
