ARCAN Fall Meeting – A Basic Livable Income
Darlene, Coordinator of Martha Justice Ministry with the Sisters of St. Martha, Antigonish, was a presenter at the ARCAN Fall Meeting. Saturday’s ZOOM session at 10 a.m. was open to all Associates and Sisters. Addressing the theme of A Basic Livable Income, Darlene was speaking about local and global initiatives in support of a basic livable income in Atlantic Canada, as well as connections with global efforts in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The session was much appreciated by the forty-six persons who attended. The number, diversity and quality of the questions following Darlene’s talk confirmed there is growing support for the ideas around a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income. Poverty and homelessness are inter-related. We need a housing model that has affordability, sustainability and a social dimension. Human dignity and human well-being demand a socio-economic policy, not just an economic goal. The talk was recorded and will be available sometime in November.
