Reflection – Visitation
I was invited to reflect on today’s gospel reading of the Visitation between Mary and Elizabeth.
So in turn, I invite you to reflect with me, but on something that may not be normally associated with the visitation – Elizabeth’s humility.
Her humility is so striking to me…
She says, “And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”
It’s like she’s saying, who am I? I’m just Elizabeth. Why would I be blessed with a visit from the mother of my Lord?
Have you ever said or thought something like that?
Have you ever been surprised or humbled at Jesus visiting you through someone else?
Maybe someone offered to fix something for you, or go with to a doctor’s appointment or
Maybe someone you didn’t expect showed up to comfort you after the loss of a loved one.
Or maybe someone simply called or sent a text… just when you needed it.
Or maybe it was an even shorter visitation…someone gesturing you to go before them in the Communion line to receive Jesus in the Eucharist.
Where have you felt this same humility at the realization that Jesus is visiting you?
Maybe we can each reflect on this by asking…
“How does this happen…
“Oh Elizabeth, how…
“Oh Lord, How does this happen that you should come to me?”
