“The Intersection of Ecology and Christianity” webinar with Heather Eaton
“The Intersection of Ecology and Christianity” webinar with Heather Eaton took place on November 1 presented by Green Churches. Heather’s presentation focused on the history of eco theologies including the challenges, limitations and current developments in the efforts to “green” Christianity. She pointed out that this goes beyond specific Christian traditions as it impacts all of creation. She included time for questions and comments from participants. Some points she raised were that it is a process rather than an event which involves a change of traditional historical Christian views of God as out there beyond life on earth with a focus on our personal salvation and moving rather to an understanding of God embedded in all of creation’s almost 14 billion year unfolding. She referenced organizations and individuals such as For the Love of Creation and authors such as John Haught, Thomas Berry and Teilhard de Chardin to broaden our ecological literacy by connecting the intersection of all aspects of our lives such as economic injustice, government responsibility, patriarchal structures and women and ecofeminism. Questions she asked us to ponder: Where do we encounter the divine? How can nature deepen our faith lives? As followers of Jesus what are our religious experiences which connect with ecological wellbeing? Who are the prophets today and are their voices about Ecology and Christianity being heard? Green Churches said her presentation which is about an hour long would be posted online sometime.
