Job Posting Translator – from French to English
Contract for 14 months, 21 hours per week
Les Soeurs de la Congrégation de Notre-Dame is a Catholic religious congregation founded in Ville-Marie (Montréal) in the 17th century by Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys. The Congregation has 500 sisters in Canada, the United States, Japan, Honduras, Guatemala, Salvador and Cameroon. Women of faith and commitment, the sisters of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame are well known in Quebec for their exceptional contribution to the education of girls and boys and for the creation of the first schools of higher education for girls. In addition, they are present in the places where there is need and come to the aid of those who are struggling and marginalized.
The General Administration and the Mother House of the Congregation are located in Montréal and the team consists of approximately 20 employees and about 10 sisters. Communication Services number 8 employees including 6 trnaslators.
MANDATE
Replacing a translator who will be on maternity leave. Translating texts from French to English using a variety of tools including Trados.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
The incumbent reports to the Director of Communication. The mains tasks are:
- Translate texts accurately from French to English within the specified deadlines
- Revise English texts
- Develop and update translation tools used internally (glossary, reference guides)
- Write texts on a variety of subjects at the request of the director of Communication Services
- Carry out any other tasks assigned by the director of Communication Services
Types of translations:
- Administrative texts – official correspondence, minutes, reports
- Prayers, spiritual reflections
- Documents on environmental or social justice issues
- Internal (forms, information) or external (website, social media) communications
- Transcriptions of conferences, various articles
- Sub-titles of video interviews
Skills and personal profile of the candidate
- Excellent knowledge of English and French, spoken and written
- Diploma in translation studies from a recognized institution
- Good knowledge of MS Office Suite and other online reference tools (e.g. Termium, Chicago Manual of Style, etc.)
- Able to do research, document a given topic
- Comfortable learning new working tools (e.g. intranet)
- Able to work with a reviser and a team of translators
- Able to work quickly while maintaining the necessary attention to detail
- Respect the author’s style
- Autonomy and flexibility in task management
- Comfortable working in a religious milieu and an atypical work environment
- Maintain confidentiality
- Knowledge of Trados is an asset
- Knowledge of Spanish is an asset
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Fixed-term contract
- Location: 2330 Sherbrooke Street West, Montréal
- Work hours: from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 3 days per week
- Teleworking possible depending on the case
- Remuneration: according to the salary scale in place and the candidate’s experience
- Start date: immediately
